Syndrome Parent Support Group
at Rutgers University
We are pleased to announce that
the Tourette Syndrome Program at Rutgers University is offering workshops for caregivers in TS families.
The Tourette Syndrome Program is a partnership between the
Center for Applied Psychology at Rutgers University and the
Tourette Syndrome Association of New Jersey, Inc. Parents
an other family caregivers living with TS and associated disorders
often benefit from information and approaches that are focused
on the specific challenges of parenting a child with TS.
At a parent support group, caregivers
will:
- Meet other parents of
children with TS.
- Learn up-to-date information
about TS and associated disorders.
- Have an opportunity to
learn ways that caregivers can
best understand and help their families.
- Ask questions about TS
and its impact on daily functioning at home and school.
- Talk about the challenges
of raising a child with TS with people who really know what
it is like to parent a child with TS.
- Learn how others handle
situations commonly experienced by TS families.
What happens in a parent support
group?
Skills are built using presentations,
interactive discussions, practice, and feedback. Possible
discussion topics include:
- Current knowledge about
Tourette Syndrome: "What's TS and what isn't?"
- Dealing with a new diagnosis:
Grief and hope
- Parenting roles: "What's
my job here?"
- Ages and stages: Issues
for grade school, middle school, and teen years
- The family system and
sibling relationships
- Raising socially competent
children
- Managing anger, inflexibility,
and explosiveness
- Negotiating one's own
needs as a person and parent
Who runs parent support groups?
Parent support groups will be
conducted by doctoral-level students in psychology who have
a particular interest in children with TS, under the supervision
of a licensed psychologist.
When and where will the parent
support group be held?
The parent support group will
be held at the Psychological Clinic at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. These groups will run simultaneously
with the children's social skills groups.
What is the cost of social skills
groups?
The fee for social skills groups
is determined by familial income. A sliding fee scale is
available based on demonstrated need.

at Rutgers University
We are pleased to announce that
the Tourette Syndrome Program at RutgersUniversity has established social skills workshops for children
with Tourette Syndrome (TS). The Tourette Syndrome Program
is a partnership between the Center for Applied Psychology
at Rutgers University and the Tourette Syndrome
Association of New Jersey, Inc. Children living with
TS and associated disorders such as ADHD, OCD, and other challenges
often benefit from group-based programs that focus on building
self-esteem, social and emotional awareness, skills in handling
relationships, and daily problem-solving with other children
and adults.
At a social skills group, children
will:
- Meet other children with
TS.
- Talk about their TS with
people who really know what it is like to have TS.
- Have an opportunity to
ask questions about TS and its impact on daily activities.
- Learn how others handle
situations commonly experienced by individuals with TS.
- Have an opportunity to
learn and practice skills in self-control, communication,
emotional awareness, and social problem solving.
- Have fun!

of games, conversation, and projects designed specifically
to target basic skills in social and emotional learning.
We teach models that the children can easily learn, practice,
and remember.
Who runs social skills groups?
Social skill groups will be conducted
by doctoral-level students in psychology who have a particular
interest in children with TS, under the supervision of a licensed
psychologist.
When and where will the social
skills groups be held?
The social skills group will be

Sibling Support Groups at Rutgers University
We are pleased to announce that
the Tourette Syndrome Program at Rutgers University is planning a support group for
brothers and sisters of people with Tourette Syndrome. The
Tourette Syndrome Program is a partnership between the Center
for Applied Psychology at Rutgers
University and the Tourette Syndrome Association of
New Jersey, Inc. Sibling support groups offer brothers and
sisters the opportunity to meet other siblings of people with
Tourette, share common joys and concerns and learn more about
the implications of having a sibling with Tourette syndrome
all in a lively, recreational setting.
At a sibling support group, brothers
and sisters will:
- Meet other brothers and
sisters of people with TS.
- Talk about their brothers
and sisters with people who really know what it is like
to have a sibling with TS.

Learn more about TS and
the services that people with Tourette receive.

Have an opportunity to learn
about how others handle situations commonly experienced
by siblings of people with TS.
- Discuss the implications
of their brothers' and sisters' special needs.
- Have fun!

the experience of being a sibling of an individual with Tourette.
Who runs sibling support groups?
Sibling support groups will be
conducted by doctoral students in psychology who have a particular
interest in children with TS, under the supervision of a licensed
psychologist.
When
and where will sibling support groups be held?
The support groups will be held
at the Psychological Clinic at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. The support groups will run for 8 sessions
beginning in February 2004.
What is the cost of sibling support
groups?
The fee for sibling support groups
is determined by familial income. A sliding scale is available.
