* * * * * * * * * * Tourette Syndrome (TS) is an inherited neurologcal disorder characterized by repeated involuntary motor and vocal tics. Symptoms occur in early childhood, between the ages of 6 and 9 but can also appear during the teenage years.
There are 200,000 Americans known to have full blown Tourette Syndrome, with over a million more who exhibit some symptoms. It is estimated that 7,000 people in New Jersey have TS and that 1 in 200 shows a partial expression of the disorder. Associated Conditions In addition to the motor and vocal tics exhibited by people showing symptoms of Tourette Syndrome, many can have associated conditions which include: - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD and Attention Deficit Disorder without Hyperactivity (ADD)
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Learning Disabilities (LD)
- Sleep Disorders
- Mood Disorders
At the Rutgers Tourette Syndrome Program we can helop address these other conditions while also providing TS related support. What does the Tourette Syndrome Program at Rutgers University offer individuals and families living with TS? We are a University-based program partnering with the Tourette Syndrome Association of New Jersey, Inc. (TSANJ). Our clinicians—psychology doctoral candidates under the supervision of a doctoral level licensed psychologist—bring expertise in TS and associated disorders; and collaborate with TSANJ to assess, treat and support individuals and families dealing with the disorder. The partnership also allows us to further research on TS and associated disorders and the impact on families and interpersonal relationships. What services are available? We start by learning about you and your unique needs and then work with you to best meet those needs.
